Misty Philip. No ‘s’ on the end. I love it. Welcome to the show. We're just so, so much. Yeah. We're so glad to have you here. You have a really interesting background. You've kind of. We're doing podcast stuff, and now you were called into the AI world. So let's talk about that journey a little bit. Yeah. So in 2019, the Lord called me to start the first Christian podcast conference. And so my first conference was February 21st and 22nd of 2020. Oh, and then. You. Know what happened, right? You know what happened right after that. And at the end of that 2023 conference we hosted in Houston, I was completely burned out. I was just worn, was just doing all the things. And my husband said, please, baby, just quit your company and come work with me. And I was like, what? You want me to do? What? God, what do you want me. To do? Yeah. And so we own an AI and cybersecurity advisory services firm. So we serve clients in the 10 to $50 billion range, keeping major financial institutions and major corporations safe and helping them implement AI. Wow, this sounds fun. We're going to dive into this topic because you get to see the good, the bad, and the ugly of AI. So I want to I want to learn more from you. We we often hear about the bad with AI. So let's start with the good. Like, you know, you get to see it. So talk to us a little bit about the ways that AI is shaping the future in a positive way. Yeah. So there's so many tasks that we do on a repetitive basis that could be outsourced very easily to AI. So I'll give you an example. Since we're here at the NRC and we're podcasting. One of the things I love is taking my shows when I record an interview, putting into opus clips, and it automatically generates those, well, that's AI that's doing that. So that's a really great thing where it would take me a long time to do my show notes. I can have show notes done within seconds, and then I can go in and tweak them and change them and all of those kind of things. So it that used to take me hours and so just freeing up time to them be able to do other things. I think it's great the Wickliffe is using it for Bible translation. I've been thinking about like churches that have small immigrant communities that are coming here that may not speak the language. They can have their sermons translated and reach the lost. I mean, that's what I think we need to use AI as a tool. And in the hands of a good person, you can do amazing things and it's limitless. I've got my son right now who is building, using AI to build and code apps, productivity apps. And so they'll be in the App Store next week. And it's just it's a really interesting time that we're living in as believers. And, and I really feel like God's called us here for such a time as this, to do some really amazing things. I love that, and I love that we have Christians working in the AI space because we desperately need it. Because now we're going to dive a little bit into the bad side of AI. So this is where it gets a little messy. You know, the ethics surrounding AI and the bias that has been built into some of the AI platforms is definitely a concern. So let's talk a little bit about that. And some of the things that the dark side of AI into that. Yeah. So that's so wise of you. And it's really important. So I'll give you an example. So there are frontier models that that's going to be what the United States is creating. So your ChatGPT, your Claude, your Gemini, your perplexity. Those are the big US models. Well, they're all competing with China to get to artificial general intelligence or superintelligence. China is their platform is called deep Seek. It's created by the CCP. So all of the bias of the CCP is built into that model. So even when it first came out, people would ask questions and it and it wouldn't allow you to get the answer if it was anything negative against China, of course. Right. Yeah. But all of that data is being collected and probably being stored by the CCP to then somehow be weaponized against us in the future. Right. So there are definitely real concerns about that. And what what bothers me is there are Christian companies who are putting their model on top of the deep seek model. And so even though you're putting a faith filter on top of it, the the base of it is still has that built in bias and it doesn't come out. Another really big concern is, is the hallucinations, right. Because it wants to give you an answer. So it will give you an answer. But it's not often the right answer. It could be giving you like you could ask it something about Scripture and it could give you the completely. It could give you a scriptural address with the wrong scripture. Right? Or it could make up resources that are not even real or not even applicable. Right? So you have to verify everything when it comes to AI. Yeah, I think oftentimes people forget. I mean, when I was in school, you had to have three references when you were fighting a source. You know, every AI needs to be treated like that because it is a great tool. But often sometimes the information is inaccurate or not complete. And so we do need to be checking that stuff. Let's talk a little bit about, you know, AI in the church world because I've, you know, I've heard stories of like pastors using AI to write their sermons. What are your thoughts on that? What about. You know what? Just know. That's what I think about that. I think that pastors can use it to help market to their church. And there's lots of capacities to analyze attendance or different things like that, more administrative functions. But I truly believe that our pastors need to be in the Word of God. They need to be hearing from the Holy Spirit, and they need to be inspiring our conversations. And they need to pastor us as there are shepherds. And so ChatGPT is not our shepherd. It does not have a soul, it does not even have morality. And so I am very against now let's say they're really stuck and they want a, an example. Like I'm really trying to drive this point home and I've already told the same story 27 times. Give me some examples of a story. That's fine, but don't get the sermon. Especially because the sad part of that is there's a lot of pastors who are not spending time in the word because they're so busy doing administrative things. So use AI on some of those administrative things and do the thing God's called you to do, which is be a shepherd and take care of your people. I love that, you know, I've heard the way to use the AI is to kind of treat it like your own personal intern, like, you know, so in our in our daily work and things, things that you would trust an intern, you're going to give them tasks that are very administrative in nature. Right. But you're still going to check their work. That's right. That's right. There is, you know, because at this point it's not fully trustworthy. Right. So, right. What are some things that, you know, if if a Christian is looking for ways to kind of engage AI in their daily spaces, where do you think that's most appropriate for us? Well, I think the thing is, most Christians, even the ones who are like, I'm very against it. I think it's evil. They're probably using AI way more than they think they do. Okay. You're right. So like if you got here in a car and you used a map app, all of that uses machine learning. If you watch Netflix, it's going to scroll to the next thing. We have agents that are doing things autonomously. And the world of AI, machine learning, natural language processing, vision learning. Now we've got robots coming on. There are so many components to this whole thing. And so I think most people just are not aware, like the Alexa that they have in their home or, you know, their Apple Watch that's tracking their health. All of that has machine learning, which is the precursor to AI, right? Yeah. Yeah, the data collection center, it's pulling in all the data. Love that. Well, so in your work that you do with your husband kind of helping businesses and in scaling AI usage across platforms, what are some of the the warning signs that you see maybe coming for the workforce? You know, because as Christians, we're out in the workforce. And so we definitely are concerned about what AI could do or could not do. So what do you see coming in that space? Yeah. So that was the very first thing I did when I started working with my husband. Well, the first thing I did was make myself a dictionary so that I could understand what these tech people were talking about because they all talk in acronyms. The second thing I did was I wrote a book because I am an author, speaker, podcaster. I knew to do that to help transition myself from media and to tech. And we did it by writing a book called Upskill or Die. Okay, thriving in the AI Revolution. Because my husband and I kept having all of these conversations like, that's our date night, where we talk about AI, we're those geeky people. And I'm like, what are people going to do? Like, AI can automate so many things. If it starts taking away all of these tasks, so many people. I mean, our identity needs to be in Christ, but a lot of people, their identity is tied up in what they do. And what happens if those jobs are gone and then what do they do? And so I did a little simple experiment. I went on my social media to all of my friends, and I said, what do you think AI is and how do you use it? And most of them were like, it's ChatGPT and they didn't really know much about it. They either loved it or they hated it. They thought it was evil or whatever. And I was like, oh, these people, they just don't know. And many of my friends my age have kids going off to college. And I was like, they're going to be hit. Either the parents are going to lose their jobs, the kids aren't going to be able to get a job. And so we wrote a practical guide to first inform people like it's AI 101. What is a. And then here's a framework for you to start incorporating it into your daily life. Here's some ways that you can use it. Start prompting. Learn how to do a better. Prompt some of those kinds of things and give them a framework of training. So that was the first book, but I knew when God gave that to me, that was like only part of the story. Right? So that's what led me to write the next book, which is the Trojan Horse
of the Digital Age:Why Christians Must Discern AI. So that book comes out next month, and that's what I'm here, trying to inspire people to ask questions. So the Trojan Horse was a gift that was given, and they didn't think to look what's inside. And so everybody was like, convenience, you know, all the things that we're looking at AI for now. But what's the bigger picture and what are the hidden dangers and the unintended consequences? Because where is this kind of all leading us as a, as a people and, and is it the kind of world that we want to live in? Right. Is there still time to. I think that's why I'm here. There is time. Let's talk about it. I don't know, but the real problem with that is, is, like I said, America is they're in a race with China. And I don't really think these big tech companies care who they hurt in the process when their goal is ASI and AGI, which is super intelligence, general intelligence. That means it's smarter than all of the feds ever. When we have machines that are smarter than men coming online. Yeah, that's that's pretty scary. I mean, I saw a Terminator. Did y'all not see Terminator? No. Isn't that crazy? Yes, I did too. I also saw Wall-E, you know, and that's a world where they all just, like, float around as big blobs and drink these, like, little drinks, and they don't work. They don't do anything. Right. So that's all your AI, you know, Terminator style? I'm not sure. Yeah. My husband's hoping more for Star Trek, you know, like the next generation. That might be fun, but. Yeah. Well. And so the book, where can people get their hands on the book when it drops? Yeah. So I am going to encourage them to go to Misty Philip com that will lead them to my resources at Amazon. But the reason I want them to go to my website is because I created a 12-week course for free, okay, for churches to use, for small groups to use, for parents to use. I have table talk conversation starters for them to get around the dinner table, grab friends together, start talking about these issues, and then I have an AI assessment checklist that will be available for them as well. To start analyzing all these places where they think that they're not using AI, but AI is already. There, is using you. That's right, that's right. Oh my gosh, I love that. I mean, that sounds like a really fun I am thinking of my own personal life. I'm like, am I just bring that into the old family gathering night and we'll start doing that? I mean, that's great because we don't know. And first, I think I need your book, number one, because I don't understand all the jargon. So for people that want to start with book number one, to get the foundation and then move into the Trojan, okay. Where do they get book number one? Is that also on your website? On my website. Is okay. Good, because I think that would help level up my conversation around AI, because I really don't understand all the pieces of it. I just also am smart enough to see the danger in it. So, you know, I'm good at reading the tools as they say. Yeah, so I just know that there is a danger. And if Christians don't speak into this and help shape the world that we're creating, that's right. Then we're toast. That's that's you're absolutely right. Which is fine, because I mean, in the on Jesus comes in. We know that. Yes. But we know it gets bad before it gets bad. It does. Right? Yes, exactly. But one of the hidden dangers that I talk about in that first book that people don't even talk about is these huge data centers that they're creating problems. The data centers are causing the amount of water and electricity and water. We need water for life. And people are like chatting with their, you know, like ChatGPT as like, thank you. And like, I'm like, do you realize that every prompt that you are doing that is water that you are wasting? I mean, we don't think about those things. No we don't. And yeah, I mean, a lot of us are battling those data centers in our area because they're gobbling up all the farmland. I mean, there's a real, you know, issue there. And then the electricity, they use the water like you mentioned. I mean, that's a substantial thing that we need to consider as a society. That's right. Yeah. That's good. That's in your first book. Yes. Okay. Good, good. Well, Misty, it has been an awesome conversation today. I'm really excited. In closing, do you have any words of wisdom for parents or for church leaders that are listening? Just something that can really help them? Kind of. Maybe not be so fearful of AI, but also, you know, understand the dangers that are there. Yeah, absolutely. God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love and a sound mind for pastors. I want you to get educated on what AI is, how you can effectively use it without giving over agency to AI. God created you in his image and he's gifted you. We don't want to lose our critical thought and and to to pastors and parents and everybody. You have to be in the Word of God. Because if you don't have the Word of God hidden in your heart and you're not walking with the Holy Spirit, you will be deceived by what's coming on the face of the earth. And I know that sounds heavy and intense, but it's true, because with the with the deepfake videos and all of the things that are happening in that regard. We're not going to be able to know what is true and what's not true. So we have to be in the word and we have to walk with the Holy Spirit. We do. We need that discernment. Oh my gosh, from the Holy Spirit, I love that. Thank you so much, Misty. Thanks for welcome. All right. Thank you, listeners. Thanks for tuning in. We'll see you next time on the Covenant Eyes Podcast. God bless.
